I've compiled my thoughts on #csm195 chapter into an absurdly long thread i spewed into my friend's DMs, there's a lot of stuff here and I wanna know what y'all think (continued in the next post, now with alt text)

okay so
god, where do i even start

i think asa is trying to die/kill herself because she doesn't want to undergo any further sexual trauma, i think that's the primary driving force behind her actions in this chapter, that's the 'thing yoru is planning after the death devil'

yoru doesn't strike me as someone who makes long term plans that are worse than wiping out humanity, i think that's asa being desperate and horrified at the idea of what yoru's gonna do after death is defeated

"Beating the death devil won't solve anything, it's so bad I don't even want to say it, please"

Lines like this, and this theme in general makes me solidly confident that the decision to not show asa's internal thoughts recently is 100% a deliberate decision to raise tension about this thing

"Are you gonna kill me or do you wanna die" leading into him actually trying to kill Asa is pretty horrific, but not entirely unexpected. Denji's pretty much done with fantastical chainsaw-based violence right now. He chops down living trees with an axe, he tries to shank barem with chopsticks, he points a gun at yoshida and pulls the trigger. He's willing to kill if it suits him, and I think his turn into doing it through mundane ways is indicative of his broken mental state

At this point he's a moral nihilist doing whatever he believes suits him in the moment. Eating, killing, giving in to his sexual impulses. I don't think any of these things are given much distinct weight within his mind at this point when he's the one doing them. Like, he didn't stop to consider his desire for Yoru when it came to killing Asa, he just immediately went for it and was surprised when she fell back and he missed

I like the exchange on the following page, her calling him a murderer, him balking at it because she told him, then her telling him she wants a little longer. It feels like a version of a conversation they would've had 50 chapters ago, taken to its absolute extreme of despair and emotional turmoil

these two people just cannot fucking get along and the world keeps shoving them back together

I'm still trying to figure out what denji's "I'm still never ready for it, somebody who can only kick the bucket once could never be mentally prepared to die" thing. Is it trying to reassure her that her fears are understandable? That seems like the obvious answer

Anyone saying "He deliberately hit the ground in front of her to snap her out of it" isn't using their head at all. It's crazy that that's what people are doing to try to defend denji's actions

As if manipulating someone into thinking they're going to die to prove a point is something denji would *ever* do, even in this amoral state. Honestly that take is big character assassination, which is funny because it's meant to be anything but that

I think the aesthetic call to the aquarium here is deliberate. Denji sees her, has a realization that shit's way worse than he thought, and is trying to do something about it to make her feel better - even if that something is what Asa finds initially distasteful

I'm also thinking about the "chair" motif that keeps popping up through part 2. Chairs are happy, in their own way

I think it can be read as a symbol of the mundane domesticity of denji's violence, and a dig at his "chairs are happy in their own way" thing

Denji is a chair, being used for an unthinking purpose, he is using a chair for an unthinking purpose
I have no idea if that's intentional but it's cool

Right now, I have no idea if his gambit to cheer up Asa will make her any happier. I don't know what would happen if she fell in line with his devilish hedonism

I also mentioned in a post earlier idk if you saw that in hindsight, I feel dumb for expecting her to call denji out, for him to snap out of it, for her to "fix" his mindset. It's not her job to do that. She's a survivor too, she's been through the wringer. She deserves to be mad, but she also deserves to sob and to want to do anything, anything at all, to not go through what yoru did again

And by extension what denji did

in a sense, asa really is increasingly written out of the story "chainsaw man". asa is given no place in the struggle. denji comes to see yoru - a symbol - as the only entity there is, over asa the person, even though he despaired over others treating him the same wrt chainsaw man

#csm195 I can't tell if Denji doesn't care about Asa or if he is just caring in the only way he knows how (which is terrible for this situation) and that is frustrating me. Which I assume is the point, but man, I was hoping Denji would get some sense knocked into him

Chapter got me thinking about how Denji and Asa are different in handling their trauma. Asa is prone to piling every single piece of it onto herself which leads to her suicidal tendencies, whereas Denji lets it spill out onto everyone in his life, including him, through violence and hedonism
