Absolutely! It is a lazy critique. Maybe what folks mean is "I wish the dialogue felt more sincere" and what comes out is "The dialogue is cheezy", which, in a comic book film, it should be!

It's mostly used as a slam against heavily ironic and disaffected Joss Whedon-esque dialogue. As Whedon did the writing in the first Avengers, the style - and the criticism - stuck around.
Plus ScarJo's line delivery didn't do much to counter it.

I think generally it's better if they remain somewhat mysterious. You as the author, however, absolutely need to know the rules.

I'm going to have a way better time with a cast of complex, flawed, relatable characters in a bland, handwavey fantasy setting than I will with lazy, one-dimentional trope characters in a world with a detailed 10k year history with dynamic and engaging politics.
