My understanding is that esm updates are official patches for Universe and some select backports that have historically been the responsibility of the community. Not a great look, but the esm patches aren't done by volunteers so I can see why it's a cost

Tbh, I think the vast majority of the actual audience would prefer manageability to feature set. I'd love to implement DSC but it's just so painful to configure at scale in any way. This is especially true in orgs that don't have the budget to have an entire devops team

I horribly abuse the function provider in a script to automate some server config. Prefix the names with xxx_ then iterate and execute matching functions. Lets me keep defs isolated without having to remember to add them to the script body. I feel dirty every time it runs

Definitely a "different environments for different purposes", but I tend to go out of my way to put pwsh on my linux installs. I find that the object pipeline fits better. I just wish there were performant versions of file operations that didn't require I resort to manual .Net
