Q: What else would you like to share that I haven’t asked? A: I was resistant to characterizing this book as being “about motherhood” because that used to feel limiting to me. But now I wonder: why limiting? Birth-giving isn’t just life-or-death—it’s the whole LIFE side of the equation! Why do we anchor on a single image of a “mom” when mothers come in as many varieties as individuals? I used to think, when a new book on the subject would appear: oh god, another book about motherhood! The same way I thought, when Conclave came out: oh god, another movie about the Pope! But surely motherhood is as inexhaustibly fruitful as any other topic relevant to the lives of millions. Also, I watched Conclave, and it was really good.
