I was in Zimbabwe during an election in 2000. Dictator Robert Mugabe was being challenged by a democratic movement. Election night, from my Harare hotel, I got results from the BBC and VOA, not the state-owned ZBC. I despise that now VOA may join Mugabe's ZBC as a state-owned propaganda organ.

It is exactly like time travel. While I was reporting a story about a woman who had lived in an iron lung, I wondered what it would be like to be in one -- so I found one in a dusty storage room and a respiratory tech agreed to let me experience it.
I was the last person in an iron lung at Vanderbilt University Medical Center
It was in a storage room. It still worked. For some reason, I was allowed to get in it.

In East Nashville in the '80s we had a neighbor kid who went to Christ the King school. Every fall she'd come around fund raising and we'd pick something from her catalog and make the check to "Christ the King." When the check would come back, I'd look at the endorsement. I was always disappointed.
