this is why people talking about how talented he was or whatever was so weird to me

the most replacement level converter of ultrarich donor money to astroturfed support possible

people need to show some respect to the data troops

lot of people who vote in off cycle elections want to feel like very special boys and girls

also a lot of people bad at causal analysis think the marginally higher likelihood of electing a socialist in a low turnout electorate is worth the much higher chance of electing a conservative/machine pol

chad straphanger mayor has great meme potential
November 5, 2025 at 3:35 AM
yeah that rules, good things happen when democrats hold power that's why we should ensure that the city votes democratic in every mayoral election like it does in presidential ones

and if it's about influence, i fail to see why having two legislative sessions to influence state gov is a negative
November 4, 2025 at 1:49 PM
yeah it was so cool how nyc voted for bill clinton by a million votes then the very next year made rudy giuliani mayor!

and then when eric adams got to treat the city like a piggy bank cause he was able to secure 400k votes in a city of 8+ million in a june primary of an odd year, that was awesome!
November 4, 2025 at 1:38 PM
easy to cast a vote that would allow you to be mayor for ten years! have some faith in yourself!

happy to see tony womack still holds the crown for the most impactful hit of the 21st century

think it's just as likely that infrequent voters are especially susceptible to a charismatic outside, especially when name recognition is associated with high unfavorables

more generally, the extreme low turnout of the current system has historically favored machine candidates with dependable bases
October 30, 2025 at 3:02 PM
have you seen the quality of our high-frequency voters?

like this is basically an "ensure rudy giuliani would never again win a mayoral election" proposal
October 30, 2025 at 2:48 PM
vote no on 6 if you liked mayor rudy giuliani, vote yes on 6 if you want the democratic nominee to be elected mayor in every election

alternatively, you can become a fan of the wnba where players do things like helping flip senate seats that had previously been held by their team's owner

isn't the "lacking legal permission to enter" point also bs?

my understanding was that eg people whose asylum claims were ultimately denied or who were given tps still had legal permission to enter the country

or am i missing some nuance there?

they're good, anti-nimby reforms (though not likely to dramatically increase supply on their own)

even a bad mayor would need the bp or council speaker to sign off on any override the new system allows

whereas the current system empowers every reactionary member to block housing in their district

i guess i just think redistributing money from the superrich to regular people and establishing a functional social safety net would be good for the market on the whole (partially by giving more people the opportunity to become index investors)
October 20, 2025 at 6:33 PM
guess i just don't see how those would necessarily lead to lower stock prices in absolute terms (as opposed to lower than they would be without those things)

index investing is still the best strategy for most people in a world where stock prices always go up over time but less so than they do now
October 20, 2025 at 6:24 PM
so the arg is that there's a set of political conditions that would lead to widespread prosperity and freedom from want that *wouldn't* also result in s&p goes up?
October 20, 2025 at 6:18 PM
think she just means they have to leave a little leeway so they can say you know what this shit actually is illegal the next time a democrat is president

ms has made great progress but misleading graphic

ms black 4th graders are 9 points above the national average in reading, 8 in math

by 8th grade it's +3 in math and +0 in reading

ca black students go from -7 in math and -13 in reading to +0 in math and +4 in reading for comparison

not sure we're getting the whole story here tbh

really don't feel great about darvin ham and adrian griffin as the implicit comps for who might replace sandy to be quite honest!

"In the 2023 Finals, Brondello's squad was comprehensively beaten by an Aces team down two starters"

the aces were down two starters in exactly one game in that series, and the libs were a missed wide open midrange jumper from winning that game
