The Pine Barrens Here, underneath the cosmos, does God see you both under the same sky? Do the shadows of the barren trees reflect over both of your bodies? Are God's ears in the stars? Does he hear your wails through the freezing air? Does he transmute your pain into something other than a tangible loss? Does he really turn water into wine? Is your blood the color of the wine? Is the sky the color of the water? Do you feel yourself exsanguinate beneath the pine trees? Do you feel the hollowness in your chest? Do you feel your life spilling into the soil? Do you feel holy fertilizing the trees? Do you feel like Mother Earth herself? You both traveled through the same forest. You felt the same air on your skin. And one putrid day, he realized that there was no holiness to be found in you. Are you a sinner? Has God forsaken you for your idolatry? Did God watch idly by as the one you loved let the trees leech off your body? Do you feel drunk yet? Is alcohol a suitable analgesic? Is it a suitable anesthetic? Do you feel yourself drift away into nothingness? Do you feel God's embrace under the cosmos? Do you feel vindicated? Do you feel happy?
