Squizzle the Red Squirrel was released at Yair Bridge on 25 September after being found injured there on 22 August and taken to Border Vets for treatment. We made sure his leg injury was completely healed before successful release.

So when I got call on Friday from Border Vets that they’d another Red Squirrel in I hoped it wasn’t pox again. Thankfully it wasn’t & instead was suspected broken leg. However X-ray showed no break so Squizzle, as he’s been named, has been taken into care until his injured leg’s better. 2 in 3 days!

Until this week I’d never had a Red Squirrel in care. Closest I’d come was earlier this year when I went to Selkirk to check on a poorly one but it died before I got there. It tested +ve for pox & Squiggle the Red Squirrel that I took into care Wednesday died from suspected pox. Then I got call…cntd

Squiggle was found crawling on road near Innerleithen. I met up with finder in Selkirk & brought lethargic Squiggle home for a check up. I noticed tiny lesions around one eye. Lesions & lethargy point towards squirrel pox. Sadly he died soon after arriving in care. He’ll be sent off to test for pox.

Meet Ollie, a Carrion Crow. In this photo he’s just arrived back with me after I met up at Roslin with finder who had travelled with Ollie from Falkirk as he could find no rescue closer that had space to take him. Ollie’s struggling to fly so hopefully bit of TLC will have him back in the air soon.

Was at Hawick Vets earlier picking up juvenile gull that had been brought in. A hook with metal fishing lure was through bottom beak. Vet removed & it’s now with me for a few days before release.
Accidents happen but can anglers please make every effort not to leave fishing tackle behind in water.

She was assessed as dehydrated so was given fluid injections after she was weighed. She ate some cat food & gained 15g overnight. Good news, as hogs often drop weight when first taken into care.
She did poo which was examined under microscope. Round worm was found so she’s being treated for that.

This Hedgehog arrived yesterday after being seen lying out in sun in East Lothian. They don’t sunbathe so was in trouble. Burntisland Hedgehog Haven was contacted by finder but like many rescues was full so BHH tried me. I’d room for one rescue so a volunteer, Tim, drove her to me. Fab team effort!

At yesterday’s event at St Boswells Community Woodland we carried out some small mammal trapping, catching both Wood Mouse and Field Vole, and also some moth trapping, catching lots of moths including Square-spot Rustic and Copper Underwing.

Meet Ozzy the Common Pipistrelle who came into care a few days ago. He was underweight but quickly learned what mealworms are for as can be seen in video.
The thumping in background is Pablo stomping round his tortoise table. Pablo was rehomed from SSPCA.

Swift found by Julie in her hairdresser’s toilet. Literally in actual toilet! Don’t know how it managed it but Julie fished out & got it dry. She called me & I picked it up. She did great job making sure feathers weren’t damaged. After some TLC I took for release. Thanks Julie for saving this one!

Got message today about Ash tree that had lost big hollow limb, exposing an owl nest. We went out to check & found a young Barn Owl in a very exposed nest. It couldn’t be left there as it was too exposed & wasn’t old enough to survive on its own. It was very thin but we’ve got it to eat a little.

Daisy has settled into care well and that’s probably due to the garden’s owner hand feeding her.
Her future will either involve her release back in Edinburgh if her vision in her one eye improves enough for that or a good life in captivity.
June 16, 2025 at 12:55 PM
After we picked her up she was taken to Hawick Veterinary Practice and we got ointment for her eyes. Ointment is to treat conjunctivitis, to stop infection in the empty socket and may help restore some sight in blind eye but that is not a certainty.

The owner of the garden she visited fed her along with her mum and siblings and got in touch with us as she was concerned about Daisy’s future. At some point mum fox will chase off her cubs so she can have another litter and when that happens Daisy would struggle.

Meet Daisy. She came into care a few days ago after being picked up from a garden in Edinburgh. She is a young fox with only one eye and the one she has is almost blind, though she can see light and shadows.
Following thread tells her story so far.

Not ideal outcome for wildlife rehab but glad this little one has a future nonetheless.

Mo has been with us a few weeks. Due to his weakened & desperate state on arrival Mo very co-operative with his care. Despite best efforts to encourage natural & wild behaviour he has yet to show any at all. To put it simply - Mo is a ball of harmless fluff.

Meet Mo, a Tawny Owlet found on a golf course far from any tree that could have an owl nest in it. Owlets do explore but usually stay close to nest. Normally I advise to leave owlets alone but sometimes they need taken into care. Mo was weak & thin but perked up after eating mice I had in freezer.

Best type of wildlife rescue is where wildlife is caught & released as quickly as possible.
Recently we were asked to relocate duck that had hatched 17 ducklings in an enclosed courtyard & crows were showing interest in ducklings. We finally caught them & took to Tweed for release.
