Lastly, Petro's pledge not to sign new oil and gas contracts is fiercely opposed by myriad actors so even a COP30 roadmap on FF would likely do little to dampen the hostility. This opposition is something I explored in this @climdevjournal.bsky.social article: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Speaking at the @beyondoilgas.bsky.social press conference today, Colombia's acting environment minister, Irene Vélez, said: "Despite being a producer country of oil and coal, we have chosen not to grant any new oil exploration contracts nor any new coal mining titles.”

As we witness climate obstruction in real time at #COP30, this @cssn.org presser w/ @timmonsroberts.bsky.social, @daniellefalzon.bsky.social, @maxboykoff.bsky.social and Carlos Milani to discuss a new global assessment on climate obstruction is rather timely.

💡 @timmonsroberts.bsky.social makes 3 points at the @caadcoalition.bsky.social & @ucs.org presser #COP30:

1 Disinformation is everywhere

2 Those w/ structural power deploy disinformation to maintain status quo.

3 Solutions exist & they're urgent.

“El gas natural no es un combustible de transición, es un retroceso”, afirmó Javier Dávalos Gonzalez hoy en una rueda de prensa de Climate Action Network Latinoamérica en la #COP30.

In this new policy paper for @rielcano.bsky.social, I explore various challenges facing EU-LAC partnerships and also the opportunities to strengthen EU cooperation on climate action and a just energy transition with a focus on Colombia and Chile. More details below🧵

Here’s a short video and related interview I did with the Sussex Researcher School on my doctoral project, which is exploring how different actors are contesting and shaping Colombia’s just energy transition.

With Colombia’s hydroelectric plants normally generating around 70% of electricity, the drought precipitated a national energy crisis with water rationing and also thermoelectric plants running on coal and gas having to drastically ramp up their output to reduce the risk of power cuts. /3

I took the photo at the Peñol reservoir next to the town of Guatapé. Water levels had fallen by more than 60% due to droughts exacerbated by El Niño and local residents were reeling from a steep drop in tourism as visitors looking to have fun on the reservoir stayed away. /2

This is the most striking image I took in June this year during my doctoral fieldwork in Colombia and shows precisely why rich nations at #COP29 must offer developing countries at least $1 trillion a year in climate finance. 🧵

🗳️Delighted to have been re-elected as a Policy and Research Officer on the Student Sustainability Committee at Sussex University. Universities must lead on confronting the climate and ecological crises. That's why I'll continue to focus on booting fossil fuel companies off campus.
