6/ Having a Community Right to Buy in England will be amazing, but it needs to be expansive, & apply to all land & property that communities value - for social, economic & environmental reasons.

Doing so would allow communities to dream bigger:

Why communities need the power to own environmental assets - Power to Change
Imagine if as well as pubs and village halls, communities could dream big and purchase beloved rivers, woods, and peat bogs. A tweak to Labour’s forthcoming ...

5/ There are, therefore, two possible next steps:

a) To secure the strongest possible guidance ensuring environmental assets are included in Community Right to Buy;

b) To press for an amendment in the Lords so that this is in the Bill itself.

Those of us campaigning for this will push for both!

4/ Minister @miattafahnbulleh.bsky.social did not adopt the amendments, yet stated that "environmental assets will be captured within assets of community value" - but only via separate guidance.

It's unclear why, given her welcome support for this, such provisions can't just be included in the Bill

3/ He was joined by Lab MP Dr Beccy Cooper, who spoke in favour of the amendments.

Another 19 MPs added their names to the amendments in advance of Report Stage- here they are below.

And other MPs wrote privately to Ministers urging them to make these changes.

Huge thanks to all who wrote to MPs

2/ Labour MP Simon Opher (@simonforstroud.bsky.social) gave a great speech introducing his amendments, which would've added 'environmental' to the social & economic criteria by which communities can nominate Assets of Community Value.

Here's his speech:

The article has a bigger picture in which you can see the dead willow saplings; the molinia grass around them is bleached in a circle, a tell-tale sign of glyphosate spraying

And all of this is behaviour I have called out vociferously for many years, in all my books and in many blogs, see e.g. link below. But no, in this case, I know they are not responsible. But someone with knowledge of the remote moor is. www.inkcapjournal.co.uk/the-queen-mu...
The Queen must rewild Balmoral
Queen Victoria kicked off the grouse-shooting craze. Now, Queen Elizabeth should reverse the damage, writes Guy Shrubsole.

Er, no. The Duchy haven't poisoned their own trees. Try another guess

I would suggest you are not overly familiar with the systems of power and influence that exist around Dartmoor

Um, no. Whoever did this is very familiar with an extremely remote part of Dartmoor.

Er, no. The Duchy haven't poisoned trees that they helped pay for. Try another guess

The Duchy of Cornwall reacted with dismay to the news, saying: "Woodland expansion alongside peatland restoration is central to a restored landscape across Dartmoor.”

It is essential that all Dartmoor farmers, common graziers & conservationists condemn this act of ecological vandalism.

The UK is now the first major oil and gas producer in the Global North to shift away from fossil fuels - the kind of leadership needed to drive a global phase-out.
