Where I'm from, any aerodrome with 10k or more yearly aircraft operations is required to have AFIS, and any with 30k or more is required to have a control tower. 40k you get an approach control. To me, detowering an airport that had ~90k operations last year is just.. wrong, even if it's just GA

Yes, there's ~20k uncontrolled aerodromes in the US alone and thousands more around the planet. There's still ARTCC for the surrounding area but pilots coordinate with each other in a set radio freq. when close to the airport. The bad idea is de-towering an airport this active in an area this busy
