Airline Pilot - Gamer - Foodie
Sims for recurrent and even the entirety of initial training is a compromise the industry has accepted as it is extremely costly to train a pilot in an actual jet with no revenue pax.

Calling it 1:1 is disingenuous IMO. The flight characteristics of the sim are not comparable when it comes to actual application.

Trying to remove the 1500hr rule and implying sims are enough to bridge the gap implies to me 250-1500 is 1250hrs of sim = ok. At least the way I read this thread.

No. All training outside of IOE and OE is done in the sim, state side 121 at least. I know some countries require a few actual landings in an empty plane before pilots can be released to line flying.

Sim training in its current state cannot replace the real deal. The infinite combinations created by dealing with fluid factors, weather, MX, the NAS makes for a more well rounded pilot.

Not to mention the sim is as good as the instruction and personal mindset. The safety net does it no favors.

Sick calls rarely result in operational repercussions unless it’s some crazy number of calls from a lot of pilots like over a holiday.

Airlines have reserve pools exactly for these situations, if those get eaten up then the trip goes premium which is a nice extra bit of cash to whoever gets it.

With that said, hand flying is definitely much less common these days which is not the greatest thing. Training departments also try to encourage more hand flying from their pilots too keep fresh.

But remember, keeping an aircraft safe is staying ahead of it and making decisions effectively.

Majority of emergencies are more about decision making than brute force mechanical/hand flying skills.

Airline pilots also go through simulator training every few months where you’re put through the ringer. Engine failures, fire, hydraulic issues etc etc.

I can hold upgrade but I refuse to commute. But everyday I fly with someone whose entire personality is politics, I definitely rethink that upgrade.

It’s mind blowing how these guys shoot themselves in the foot again and again yet still fail to realize 🤦‍♂️

In the U.S. airline pilots still use the jumpseat to commute. More than half of U.S. based airline pilots use this privilege to get to work.

But yeah all our flight deck visits are done at the gate. Arguably the best part of the job is having kids upfront and seeing their faces light up haha.

All 121 carriers adhere to the same standards. Maintenance, pilot training, rest requirements etc. Legacy, major, regional, doesn’t matter.
April 11, 2025 at 9:00 PM
Yes. Doesn’t matter how small or big the jet is. Pre and post flight walk arounds are mandatory. He most likely saw some sort of discrepancy during his walk around and was confirming with maintenance control whether it’s been addressed already or if it’s within limits to be dispatched.

Unfortunately the majority of pilots basically worship both those clowns. One of the many reasons why this idea is a bit far fetched.
February 21, 2025 at 9:02 PM
Yes. Easily. As long as the weather is decent enough to visually identify a runway. Thousands of general aviation aircraft fly this way every single day (VFR flight rules, pilotage and dead reckoning). Even a private pilot can and does fly this way.

Thing was a freaking lawn dart man. Insane speed.

On fire too? O2 explosion? Curious to read the report on this one when it comes out.

RIP 😔

Compounded with whatever reason caused the Blackhawk to lose contact with the aircraft after they called them insight. Or could be they never had them, had a different aircraft lined up on runway 1. We’ll know more once we see what was going on in the flight deck prior to impact.

When it comes to aircraft incidents/accidents, it is NEVER just 1 reason. There is always a chain of events that lead to an upset

As an example to your statement (this may/may not be true). Due to a ATC shortage, the controller was forced to direct traffic this way

People would rather get their knowledge from podcasts and TikTok’s these days than actively reading up on a topic.

Yesterday I was sitting in my boxers at home, pet cat in hand, 20 minutes before we were supposed to land. Go home leg hits different.

Landing there is always interesting. It’s about as close as I’ll ever get to another airliner in the air while operating an airliner.
