The sights and sounds of Camden this afternoon

A successful twitch to Upper Hollesley common to see the smart first winter Brown Shrike, it often kept low out of the chilly wind that cut across the heath, but some good views were had. Nice to see Crossbills and Yellowhammer and several stonechats, thanks to @richardcsmith.bsky.social for driving

There were plenty of Harlequin ladybirds swarming around Gunton church tower in the afternoon sun, more than I'd like to see but interesting to see the many different patterned morphs they arrive in.

A morning of both quality and quantity at Dunwich with the Turkestan Shrike, plus 4 flyover Glossy Ibis, 3 spoonbill, WT Eagle and GW Egret. Several house martin passed through. 2 Dartfords were nearby, Hobby and 2 redpoll over but the YBW stayed hidden. All topped off with an Ipswich derby win!

An evidently very slow news day for the EDP, another young a green reporter and editor appearing to conflate a red list species is a bird that is numerically rare... 🤦🤦

Meadow pipits are often taken for granted but not this one that was found all by itself in the front garden and then transferred to the back garden, a most unexpected find so far today.

A walk around the patch this afternoon, removed a couple more purri purri burr seedings, negligently introduced to the site in the aftermath of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust Anglian Water combo mitigation measures but who will hold them to account? Found a quirky presumed False chanterelle mushroom .

After previously finding a Bloxworth snout in the gents at the Triangle Tavern last year, a visit to the Plough and Sail pub revealed this worn bordered straw in the gents, the 'moths found pub toilets' list continues to impress...

A blustery afternoon walk didn't hold much promise but a single wheatear was a surprise at Gunton church burial field. Later on an interesting fungus(!) in gunton wood, hopefully the correct ID is a beefsteak fungus, which was on an oak.

Another largely bird-free walk around the patch this morning, bar a blackcap and 5 chiffchaff, was brightened up somewhat by a grey dagger moth caterpillar.

Little gull was once again on Links Road car park this evening.

Another fine 'tern fest' off Lowestoft North Denes this evening, 100s of common tern passed south between 6 and 7pm, including 2 arctic tern, one landing on the groyne. Plus a single juv little tern and several sandwich. Little gull also present in the car park again.

Got to see the last local gig by the Buster James Band at the lodge, Corton. Thanks to Peter Ransome for the lift. A great farmyard venue based at Corton.

Enjoyed a trip to Walberswick marshes for the obliging Fan-tailed Warbler, which showed well with regular flights and clearly calling it's distinctive 'zip zip zip!' Always good to see other birders and places I've not seen for years. Good amounts of sea pea with some in flower.

No sign of any terns along Lowestoft north Denes this morning but nice to see more returning turnstone from the tundra, some still looking most dapper
July 25, 2025 at 7:13 PM
A huge movement of mainly 7 spot ladybirds today, plus plenty of butterflies about, particularly high numbers of skippers, commas, red admiral and peacock. 2 SW fritillary were in Corton wood, male and female.
July 4, 2025 at 6:12 PM
Currently the temperature situation along the Suffolk coast, apparently Lowestoft hit 31c today, certainly felt like the hottest day I've experienced here.
June 28, 2025 at 8:44 PM
2 silver-washed fritillary on the patch this morning, glad to see them still here but not in the numbers seen at other sites in Suffolk! Plus plenty of butterflies on the wing, first gatekeeper, Essex skipper and ringlet of the year, certainly hot!

Standard Sunday afternoon!
June 8, 2025 at 3:30 PM
Another day, another Hornet moth! Like busses... This freshly emerged female was resting on the same tree as the others did yesterday before taking flight at noon.
June 1, 2025 at 3:04 PM
This hornet moth was this mornings highlight, at the base of the Poplar at the junction of Corton road and Links Road.

A muggy cloudy afternoon after some welcome rain, brown tail moth catapillars were found on Gunton warren plus a painted lady and a surprise find was 2 green tiger beetles busy making the next generation.

First walk around Gunton in a couple of weeks, managed at last to connect with the Firecrest in Corton Wood. A pleasant surprise was a female stonechat Gunton warren, a pale bird so presumably a 2CY rather than an eastern... 40 redwings were commuting between Gunton wood and the burial field.
