Pittsburgh <—> Memphis
I was really struck by how humanizing this one was of Blanc, especially compared to #2. The lighting choices accompanying that were so great, despite there being almost no subtlety to it haha

Funny how when a person is killed in traffic, according to the Post it’s the “car” that did it but when anyone comes along to make streets safer it’s an attack on “drivers.”

please spare a moment of pity for the folks struggling with the choice between "userbase that hates the current Silicon Valley trend" and "Skinner Box for making Nazis"

Small improvements do little to overcome the fact that at any time there isn't the smallest bit of congestion, this is a deadly speedway that lets people to drive in a way that kills & maims. And when our neighbor was critically injured at 4AM yesterday, it functioned as it is designed to function.

We then use 100 other particulars to explain why we can't make this intersection less than 10,000 sq. ft, why slowing the cars down with a human scale intersection might cause some model (made by us) to be upset, etc. etc. All of it acts to hide the obvious problem: it is just too damn big!

All of this is fine and good on its own but if this isn't a case of throwing money into a sinking ship, I'm not sure what is. Are the particulars important? Sure. This intersection is very important for people not driving. But these particulars didn't keep the person who was hit yesterday safe.

This intersection currently occupies 10,024 sq. ft of space, conservatively.
New pole signals were installed some time in '21-22. I'm sure engineers swore up and down this would make things safer; focused on the particulars of size of the signals, absence of ped signals, crosswalks, etc.

A Memphian was hit by a driver at the corner of Latham and S Pkwy E yesterday morning. This is what the intersection looks like:

Right now we don't know exactly what happened to this one person who was hit and why it happened. But don't we?
