From the look of OS maps between 1926 and 38 like there is a bit of removal in the center to form corporation street but doesn't seem transformational compared to now.

From a bit the British isles (sort of) which has basically completely gotten rid of Sunday trading laws. I wouldn't say its made much difference.

I do remember it being very enjoyable walking down a pretty active pedestrian street in the middle of Madrid in February at like 8-9pm.

(With a frozen yogurt, as there seemed to be a shop every 15m at that time)

I do wonder as the dynamics of the high street does change re:more things like restaurants etc. It might become a bit more viable.

I do remember it being really quite odd having finished a meal during the summer in central Lancaster and just nothing being open whilst also being broad daylight.

Interestingly out of town shopping was more affected by covid than the town center. (As per a CPD i very recently watched) Though everything has been negatively effected.
