In some cases, an irrelevant message may backfire, such as showing the social norm to those who didn’t misperceive norms. This can lead to unintended consequences, reinforcing incorrect beliefs or behaviors instead of promoting the desired change.

Result #3: We match survey and admin records, tracking savings for one year after the survey. Behaviorally-informed messages were effective only when they addressed a specific behavioral barrier the individual had, otherwise they were as (in)effective as a control message.
