I respect people's right to be haters, but I do enjoy analysing what I like about commonly hated Pokemon designs. I do get why people don't like Diggersby, but now when I see it I see 'Jacob Wysocki as Bugs Bunny'. I also think echoing an excavator operator in the arms and ears is clever.

It also feels like the general consensus of what Heated Rivalry even is, is exaggerated an unhelpful amount. Like, yes, it is lighthearted romance, but it's not devoid of realism. Even if it was, it's not like women are not incapable of understanding the context of the world they read/write about.

I love Rachel’s books because they exist in a world with homophobia. There are queer romance fantasies where a hockey team will have many openly gay players. Heated Rivalry is set in the real world—and a pro athlete being out is very rare because the risks are very real. That adds tension and dynamism. From OutSports Article Gay pro hockey player lived ‘Heated Rivalry,’ loves the show despite his PTSD. “I lived the show, and when I saw the first episode, it gave me a dose of PTSD,” he said. “‘I’ve been in therapy for 20 years, and I thought I was okay, and I started watching, and I was so triggered, I had to slam my laptop shut. I’ve actually been in touch with my ex-boyfriend, and we’re marveling at how the show is imitating life — ours.”

There is a lot that can be discussed here but everything I see is just so dismissive. The most baffling being the casual erasure of the fact that the show is literally adapted by a queer man. Like, sorry, but it's not just about women writing gay fiction now, there are gay men who enjoy fluff.
Toronto Life Interview with Jacob Tierney: You mentioned that the romance genre, despite delivering at the box office, isn’t respected. Why? It’s pure misogyny. Romance is something that mainly women consume, so it’s not given the same level of discourse. But it’s been amazing to see audiences come together around these books. Rachel’s works are queer, I’m queer, the show is queer. But one of the things that made it viable in terms of viewership was the baked-in female audience.

People love quoting Brock McGillis without actually reading what he said. Like, no, of course Heated Rivalry won't help hockey players come out, but do you honestly think a gritty, realistic traumatic tragedy would fare any better? And to act like the show has no good impact is frankly ludicrous.
From Outsports article: Gay pro hockey player lived ‘Heated Rivalry,’ loves the show despite his PTSD. “It’s been twisted to say I think this show is harmful,” McGillis said. “It’s not. It’s incredible for the community.” In fact, McGillis believes “Heated Rivalry” will likely expand hockey’s audience, particularly among gay fans. “Based on what I know, over 40% of NHL fans in the U.S. are women, and over 20% identify as LGBTQ+,” he said. “Those are staggering numbers. This show is going to grow that, and that is a pretty positive outcome”
