In 1969 I left the plains of West Texas to join the Navy. Our first port was Plymouth. I went to a restaurant and asked for iced tea with my meal. The waitress looked puzzled. I said it was like regular tea, but with ice. I received a cup of hot tea with an ice cube in it. My first cultural shock.

Yeah, but one of a kind unique. We used to own a cabin 2 hrs north of Anchorage with no light pollution. Well south of the Arctic Circle, so we didn't see aurora on every winter trip. But when the lights were overhead it was a very special experience.

It's possible though, that those older features are extensional and not due to foreland compression. There are some late stage compressional features within them, however. Hard to know for sure since the present day Brooks Range cuts them off.

In northern Alaska there are Carboniferous-age basins and arches (Hanna trough, Meade basin, Meade arch, Ikpikpuk basin) that are oriented perpendicular to the orogen. Superimposed on them is the Cretaceous Colville trough, which is parallel to both the orogen and rifted margin.

Thanks! It caught my attention because I lived in Singapore in the '80s.
