GSI Celebrates Women's History Month Zheng Yi Sao (1775 - 1844) GSI Celebrates Women's History Month Zheng Yi Sao (1775 - 1844) Zheng Yi Sao is considered not only the most successful female pirate but THE most successful PIRATE in history. She was married at 26 to Zheng Yi who was a privateer for the Vietnamese Tay Son dynasty who later fought for the first emporor of the Nguyen dynasty. After marrying the pirate, Sao helped unite the pirates in the area as a confederation in 1805. Two years later Zheng Yi fell overboard leaving Zheng Yi Sao in charge. After she took over she then took her fleet of over 40.000 to sale the seas. In 1810 she surrendered the confederation to the Guangdong government without punishment or fines. GSI Celebrates Women's History Month Zheng Yi Sao (1775 - 1844) Sao married Zhang Bao, her step son, and joined him while he continued to pirate for the goverment. After the surrender her new husband was given rank within the government and they continued to sail until his death. She finished her life in relative quietude as a proprietor of a gambling house in Guangdong. We thank and celebrate this badass pirate queen. Happy Women's History Month!
