Trying this out… might actually post instead of lurk, maybe.
It’s good news then! (Relatively)

I had no idea this was a thing! Got a new dishwasher coming tomorrow, it does not have a window, devastated.

Ah! I got “We can see that you haven't used your HSBC Student Credit Card in the past 12 months, so we aren't planning to replace it.” Fair enough.

I got the same email today! I had long forgotten it was originally a “student” credit card.
Low limit, no cashback or points benefits, no big loss.

Debit is for paying your rent/mortgage, utilities, withdrawing cash, and credit card bills. That’s all.

Payback time varies on many things: your household energy use, how many panels you have, do you have a battery, how big is it, your energy tariff. etc.
My panels will have paid for themselves in 6-7 years from install.
Having a battery you can charge up on cheap overnight rates is also v helpful.

No, google, I don’t want to ship 1000 chairs to New York from a supplier in Birmingham. Obviously I want a supplier local to the event… but you refuse to show me any relevant results!!

And the localisation which is difficult to bypass without a VPN: I used to be able to search for e.g a New York based supplier for an event with ease. Now all the results, despite entering “New York” into the search, are for UK suppliers because I’m searching from the UK. Absolutely useless.

To be fair, we had literally nothing else better to do!

The bags I guess are a nice perk for attendees in that scenario, and your swap idea is fab.
Personally I think, given everybody already has a drawer full of them, there are other ways to spend that money to enhance attendee experience which provide higher value than yet another canvas bag.

Ooh Bluesky didn’t notify me about these replies! I agree, they’re relatively inexpensive - partly why they make such good sponsorship items at for-profit conferences (cost £1k to produce but sell for £12k, fantastic margin). If we’re talking about not-for-profit conferences then yes for sure, - - -

I don’t know of any organisers that produce the bags for fun - if there’s not a logo on the bag, the contents will be sponsored (leaflets, goodies, etc). If the organisers of conferences you attend are paying for thousands of bags with no revenue attached, I agree they should stop! How wasteful.

I love the idea, however, usually the bags are sponsored: they’ll have the show logo *and* a sponsor logo on them. It’s a revenue stream that the organiser relies upon.
