The MAA’s GSC invites you to join our Mentorship Program! Those who would like to receive mentoring or serve as a mentor should register online by the following dates: for MAA Annual Meeting February 21, 2025 for ICMS Kalamazoo: April 4, 2025 for IMC Leeds: June 6, 2025. The intention of the Mentorship Program is for experienced scholars to welcome and briefly connect with newer members of the medievalist community (graduate students and early career scholars) at major medieval conferences and to help facilitate social and professional interactions. We will try to make the best match for participants based upon the information provided at sign-up. A Virtual Workshop offered by the MAA’s GSC: "Writing Against the Clock: Nurturing Your Creativity in the Academic World" Guest experts: Irina Dumitrescu, Bruce Holsinger, Julia Istomnia, Helen Sword. With this webinar and companion workshop, the GSC aims to get our graduate student community writing quickly, often, and efficiently, all while prioritizing the fun of it all. Dissertation completion grants and research fellowships are sadly too few and far between; most of us will not find ourselves with uninterrupted time to write without other responsibilities like teaching, service, and other personal and professional obligations pulling us away. How can we make the most of the precious time we have to do the work we love and do it well? How can we overcome the obstacles to writing that come with writing in the real world? How do some academics strike the right balance and seem to write nonstop? In part one of this event (Feb 10th), our guest speakers — all prolific writers of academic books and articles as well as works of creative fiction — will share reflections on the writing process and will answer your burning questions. Then, in part two (Feb 18th), we’ll put the advice of the experts into practice with an open writing hour, guided by Camila Marcone. MAA/GSC Grant for Innovation in Community Building and Professionalization. The purpose of this grant is to stimulate new and innovative efforts that support pre-professionalization, encourage communication and collaboration across diverse groups of graduate students, and build communities amongst graduate student medievalists. Join the Medieval Academy of America Graduate Student Committee! The Medieval Academy of America is currently accepting self-nominations for vacancies opening up on the Graduate Student Committee (GSC) for the 2025-2027 term. The GSC comprises six members appointed for a two-year term on a rotating basis. There are three openings to be filled. Self-nominations are open to all graduate students, worldwide, who are members of the MAA and have at least two years remaining in their program of study. GSC members are asked to attend the Committee's annual business meeting at Kalamazoo (either in person or virtually) during their term and to communicate regularly with the group via email and online meetings. Ideal applicants are expected to work well both independently and as part of a team in a collaborative environment. Previous experience with organizing conference panels and social events as well as facility with social and digital media are not required, but may be a benefit. GSC members can expect to learn about the inner-workings of the MAA through collaborations with other committees and senior faculty members. Interested applicants should submit the following by January 15th 2025: - The Self-Nomination Form; - A brief CV (2 pages maximum) uploaded as part of the Nomination Form; - A recommendation letter from your faculty advisor, sent to the Executive Director of the Medieval Academy by mail or (preferably) as a PDF attachment (on letterhead with signature), to LFD@TheMedievalAcademy.org. New members will be selected by the MAA Council (in consultation with the current GSC) at the 2025 Annual Meeting in Cambridge, MA.
