There were powerful merchants back then - the Hudson Bay Co comes to mind, and families in the Renaissance. In some ways, nations (royals?) acted on their behalf. That part seems very similar, but the US has been a uniquely large unified population and government that serves business.

Make no mistake; the founders were a bunch of relatively rich businessmen. The difference between them & current rich businessmen is that they needed to form a working country to protect their interests. Current multinational businessmen don't need one specific country. It's a global dominion game.
