When I first started working with Aussie colleagues it was the strength of these centralised facilities that gave their scientists an edge.

I worry that these cuts will harm Aussie science for many years to come. As you say the gov is choosing to do this - why?

In one sense it is good that Reform won a few councils as they now have to deliver on the promises they made.

As they are learning, bluster and unworkable ideas are quickly exposed by the harsh light of reality.

I think we need to normalise such citation counts and the time it takes to get here.

The reality is that only a fraction of researchers have these huge citation profiles we too often see.

It will give students a better sense of what success really looks like.

The RSC does now downplay these numbers. The issue, at least for us, is that we are now forced to submit to Q1 journals to satisfy funders.

I keep encouraging the funders to sign up to SF DORA so that they can't force this on us, maybe that's why they don't.

I am afraid so. In Thailand most grants are 1 year and output is essential to close the project.

Naturally, some work gets published before deeper studies are done, and that limits where we can submit.

It’s been a hard year for us too. I think that the competition is very fierce and journals are having trouble finding reviewers.

Those they do find are having the same issues and are perhaps unduly harsh.

We've seen this in the UK over many years. The politicians either don't have the capacity or want to solve the problems people are facing and look to blame immigrants.

What's most worrying is that facts no longer seem to matter.

There is one thing that occurs to me: the paper is rejected, the authors revise the paper based on the reviews, and then re-submit.

The journal treats it like a revision, accepting with 24 hrs. I have seen journals do this to improve publication times.

Classic Dave. Your chances of growing a decent are rubbish. Basically set things up and pray!
