I also believe identity politics are divisive and don't move society forward, but I'm a firm believer in the scientific method: propose theory, test theory, peer review findings, adjust theory in light of evidence, repeat.

How is that damaging?

Yes, it hurts, and it feels like half of the US is malicious, sexist, and racist. The real work is understanding why. I don't believe half my country is evil. What do we do now to reach them? Never attribute to malace what can be attributed to ignorance. It might feel good, but it does no work.

We had a populist message delivered, very well, by a woman. It is easy to blame sexism, which does exist - and should not!
I'm a white man and proudly voted for the party for everyone EXCEPT white men, but maybe we need to stop alienating the less enlightened, less secure white men of this country.

It may be cathartic to make statements like this, squarely placing blame on Trump voters' malice and ignoring their ignorance. We need to understand what about Trump's message they were voting for. It does no actual work to hem and haw about their evil hearts without trying to understand them.
