Stuck in SFO. Lufthansa cancelled the flight after 6 hours waiting. No hotel, no water, shops are closed. Currently 25h on my feet. 7 more until I can sleep in the aircraft. Disappointing

GitHub Day 0. Agentic #AI is everywhere in the US. #opensource can benefit from it, this talk says. But the speakers also say, devs will not be replaced—just accelerated.

I guess you could say I am a power user now. However, some recommendations make my writing worse, not better.

This year is the year! After log4shell hit, I started again with #Java and #OpenSource related public talks. I want to take this more seriously and plan to travel through Germany and visit JUGs or conferences. Usually, I travel at my own expense to attend community talks. Feel free to get in touch.

I grew up without books. No stories. No beautiful words. No education. At 16, I started to learn, and my now-wife, at 20, gave me her books. Today, at 46, it still hurts to look back. I am angry. My road was hard, far too hard. No one should have to walk on it.

For my mental health, I usually refrain from commenting on politics. Today, I feel compelled to break this rule and speak out. In Germany, history revisionists yell their devoid phrases from the chancel, echoed by those who struggle with recent politics and are afraid of the future.

The feeling when you made your Rasperry blink the first time in your life… I have to admit, without the VS Codf extension I would have been lost. Step by step…

Spent the past year working with Piotr on #Log4j. This turned into deep dives into #SBOM, VEX, and securing supply chains. In 2025, we’re building a #Maven-based tool to help #Java devs write more secure software. No funding. Let’s talk if your company’s wants to learn more about it or #OpenSource.

In November, I was in Tokyo. I came across these muddy waters with dry, withered plants. They weren’t much to look at—ugly, even. But every year, from this dirt, a lotus grows again.
If this year was tough for you, I hope the next brings something new.
Have a great 2025.

I gifted myself a new food processor. Turned out, the reason I never got into the smoothie thing was the bad device I had before. This one is a dream, using it two times a day. Next stop: oat milk.

I am getting started with hardware programming. In the pic is a fine dust sensor operated by Rasperry Pico. And no, I have no idea what I am doing.

In Germany, when we do business, we are forced to join groups like the IHK. They never did anything for me, except taking an insane amount of money - and sending me their useless paper. This time, wrapped in plastic. 🤷♂️

I work a lot, but I reflect just as much. It's not esoteric, but personal practice to review what I’ve done and how to improve. While I’ll have less time to reflect (I'm in London), I’ll make it count. What helps me reflect is ‘smoking out’ my room with incense. #MindfulCoding #Raunächte

Pull request reviews are like group therapy in the best case, like group insanity in the worst.
Kindness lets you resolve both cases.

No, AI can't take this away. You must understand your code. I followed the internet's wisdom: everyone uses Alpine. Then, an error struck. AI shrugged. Debian-based #Linux would’ve been simpler. Don't outsource curiosity—practice it. Asking is often harder than answering!

A sad trend on my website... You get this when you are not writing anything for one year. Working on @log4j.bsky.social kept me more busy than expected. Time to reverse it and patch my websites... Graphics from Plausible.

Recently, I talked about #opensource and #java in the awesome #japan user group. There were so many great people! I was there with my @tuxedocomputers laptop, and #linux worked very well!

I love my #opensource and the fact that I can install GnuCash using Brew on my Mac. However, I can imagine how some applications could be much more successful if the UI were better. And yes, I know, I should submit a patch instead of complaining :-)

I think #opensource can be exhausting at times. We should be mindful of how we treat each other and communicate. If we want an "open source community," we should build it with empathy and respect at its core.

Lately, I've been putting much effort into the #log4j website. The changes are not just cosmetic; they're about making the site more useful, accessible, and informative for everyone. Stay tuned for the big reveal – can't wait for you all to see what we've been working on!
