"To sum up, this is what I really want to say: Nazi barbarism evokes the same kind of barbarism in ourselves, one that would involve the same methods if we could do as we wanted right here and now. We have to reject that barbarism within us, we must not fan the hatred with us...." Etty Hillesum

Surrounded, led and guided by the friends of God… I do not have to carry alone what, in truth, I could never carry alone.

All the saints of God are there to protect me, to sustain me and to carry me.

Pope Benedict XVI

Today's Mass readings--the conclusion to Acts and to John's Gospel--bear the sense of an ending, but to the contrary, they anticipate what we celebrate tomorrow: the coming of the Holy Spirit to make us missionaries of the Word. In other words, these aren't sorrowful endings, but joyful beginnings!

What I will always remember is Pope Francis's humility and his profound love for the marginalized--migrants, refugees, the homeless, the destitute, people w/ disabilities, sex workers, people from minority backgrounds, LGBTQ+ individuals, the incarcerated, in other words, those whom Christ loved.

Does where we come from define who we are? Geographically? Maybe not. Spiritually? Yes. We are sons & daughters of God. Our origin is in God; our destiny is with God. We are pilgrims on the way to the Kingdom. So yes, where we come from matters. But where we are going—that defines who we truly are.

The ending of 1 Jn from Mass for Sat ends abruptly: no friendly farewells. John simply says: "Children, be on guard against idols." Mic drop. What does he mean? Given earlier references to desire and pride, he might mean: "Get outside of yourself! Stop being so narcissistic! Put Christ first." 1/2

You can tell what Elizabeth Ann Seton sought in life—communion with God—through her dedication to the poor, to orphans, and to the women she brought together as sisters in her congregation. She was, to use the language of this Jubilee Year, a sign of hope. (Image: Flickr, Fr. Lawrence Lew, OP)

As Epiphany approaches, we’re reminded to think about what we’re looking for. The Magi look for what the star was leading them towards. Mary and Joseph look for their missing child, who had gone to the Temple. Today, Jesus asks John’s disciples, who are now following him, “What are you looking for?”
