I just listened to the section about this in Nash's *Unknown American Revolution* book. I read Marjoleine Kars book back in grad school, but putting it all together shows just how stifling the monarchy's oppression really was. It was not just fussy New England provincials...

Oh wow! Nick Wolterstorff spoke at the very first academic conference I ever attended (at UVA, in the Rotunda, no less). It was a life-altering moment for me. It was a colloquium on the "Fate of the Arts."
