The figure puts down his hood, letting loose a long length of dark hair pulled back into a braid that whips around his shoulder as he turns his head to the side. The movement makes the sun catch on the silver steel of his mask, flashing light into Godwin’s eyes to blind him long enough for a weight to slam into his chest and knock him to the ground. The mask is inches from his face, sharp eyes behind it boring into him with palpable hatred. “Godwin.” The figure spits. “Melior.” Godwin breathes. His body moves for him, grabbing the wrist that threatens to bring a curved blade along his throat. Such excuses. "I will not die by his hand!" Melior's voice reverberates against the stone, carried through the necropolis of his kingdom to the witness of corpses and spirits. He exists as the single point of life, the only breath and blood that haunts its halls, and he would remain as such. Until the world crumbled down around him. Until the temples and bones inside them were crumbled and brought to dust. And even then he'd live to rule over their deaths as well, the Witch King eternal, the Lord of Decay. Melior's hands tremble as he knots the tie at his side. "If that makes me a coward, so be it. Not that a parasite like you deserves to look down on me.” “I simply can't understand where I went wrong with you.” Ermenald laments. “Was I such a poor mother? Did I not give you everything?” “A tiny cage and a noose for a leash?” Melior’s lip curls up into an ugly sneer, making his muscles twitch all the way up to his eye. “Oh, you gave me plenty, and none of it truly mine.” “Noelle–” Snarling, Melior lunges himself forward. The chains at his throat and wrists render him harmless, but Ermenald still startles and flinches back from him with a terror in his eyes that makes Melior hum inside. “Call me that again.” He dares, grinning widely. “See what I do to you.” Not like this. Not here! I don’t want to die here! Wails keep tearing out from his throat, and he swings wildly with the dagger in his hand, cutting at whatever flesh is stupid enough to get close. His bones ache with the chill of death that moves through his body. What will you give me to save you, little rabbit? Malichor’s voice purrs. Melior feels the knife wrenched out from his palm, his last bit of defense stripped from him. “Myself!” It’s all he has to bargain for. “My life! My flesh! Live in me and we’ll live forever!” So be it.

Maruki’s smile turns much softer, and his eyes are so kind that it makes the hair on the back of Akechi’s neck stand on end because he can feel that he just walked himself into a trap. “No. Akira told me.” “... Akira… talked to you about me?” “I was his councillor, we talked about all the important people in his life.” “Let’s,” Akechi says sharply, tugging on the end of his glove to pull it tighter over his hand, “cut this conversation now, shall we?” and then the left glove, trying to account for any gaps he might have in his armour, “I think it’s better for both of us if you don’t say things like that.” Maruki isn’t smiling anymore. He stares at Akechi, and finally there’s a hint of the wolf peering out from behind Maruki’s lambskin. “Akechi… are you afraid of being important to Akira?” This is why Akechi hates psychologists. He hates anyone who can pick apart his seams with such ruthless efficiency because it’s a horrible, disgusting reminder that Akechi is easy to understand. He’s always been transparent as glass, the majority of the population are simply too busy looking at their own reflections to see past themselves. But people like Maruki weren’t content with just seeing. They had to understand. They had to fix things. Like Akechi was a broken toy Maruki now had an interest in prodding. “I think I remember saying things should be kept professional.” Akechi says through a clenched jaw. “Perhaps the psychoanalysis can wait.”

"Heel." Melior commands. Ulrich immediately curves his swing down and away from Godwin, driving the tip of his sword into the cold stone beneath him with a resounding ring. He sinks down to a knee with both hands grasping tight to the sword's hit, and his head bows low in deference. Godwin has seen him like this so many times. At his feet in worship, offering endless devotion and adoration that Godwin soaked in like summer sun, but never found himself capable of returning. Now Ulrich's deference is directed somewhere else, he shivers at how cold being in its shade leaves him. Melior appears out from the writhing mass of shadow he'd been cloaked inside of, one of his hands extending out to scratch the top of Ulrich's head with the blackened nails of his infected fingers. Like Ulrich is a dog on his leash. There's almost a fondness in his eyes until they raise to meet Godwin and his mood sinks to mire. "Defender." he spits. "You have some nerve, appearing in my domain and expecting your demands to be heard." "Yet you hear them." Godwin slowly sheathes his sword to prove he's not a threat. "Please, Melior. I only wish to speak." Dark eyes narrow at him. Melior slides his hips towards Ulrich, and one of the man's powerful arms raises up to turn his shoulder into the seat of a throne of flesh that Melior delicately sets himself down on. Even on his knees, Ulrich is tall enough that Melior's left leg is left swinging where it crosses over the right, an elbow resting on the palm Ulrich offers up to him, and his head settled against it. It paints him the picture of a bored monarch looking upon an unwanted subject. "You will speak to me from the ground." Godwin's eye twitches. "I beg your pardon?" "You may not have it." His chin juts up sharply. "Get on your knees, golden boy. Grovel, and I might hear what you have to say."
