i've been thinking a lot lately of amy sedaris so i thought i'd watch through strangers with candy and while it might be the most offensive show i've ever seen, counterpoint: paul dinello 😍

7/?? - chain-gang all-stars (nana kwame adjei-brenyah) (very late!!!)

this one was a lot to process and get through but wow, how timely. obviously the plot is a little heightened but it all feels very foreboding in a time of deportations and ignoring due process.

6/?? - a sunny place for shady people: stories (mariana enríquez)

i really wish this one hit for me. so many of these stories focused on the wrong thing? one had a woman who was literally rotting away and that WASN'T the main pull of that story?? weird choices, in my opinion.

we have to take a ~personality type quiz~ at work and while i am Big Skeptical of these quizzes—especially in a professional setting—it sure is dragging me!

5/?? - the death of vivek oji (akwaeke emezi)

another book that seems to destroy everyone except me. i think it's a moving examination of grief but i would've liked to know vivek more before their death. some weight is missing when our insight about vivek comes from outside vivek.

4/?? - the harder i fight, the more i love you (neko case)

i didn't love this and that bums me out! i was looking forward to this as a big neko fan but it really fell flat: too unfocused and too many people mentioned who were just "my friend." not what i wanted, sadly.

3/?? - 33 1/3: boys for pele (amy gentry)

i had assumed this would be a long-form essay analyzing the album and its themes but instead it was more a rumination on aesthetic theory vis-a-vis 'boys for pele.' while some bits were interesting, it didn't really reveal anything new to me.

2/?? - a minor chorus (billy-ray belcourt)

i'm still trying to decide how i feel about this one. i did like it, but it wasn't really what i was expecting. i struggle a bit with the main conceit of the book [...] because so much of the 'extra' stuff was a lot more moving.

1/?? - the song of achilles (madeline miller)

this didn't destroy me emotionally like everyone on tiktok said it would. [...] patroclus and achilles both felt a little one-dimensional: patroclus was only obsessed with achilles, and we only know achilles as patroclus sees him.
