Long-term declines in civic engagement (in particular among younger generations) is a known issue with emergency volunteers, but as far as I can tell the number of volunteers has bounced back post-pandemic and are higher than 10 years ago (inferred based on a 2023 FEMA report i found online)

Disproportionate coverage also plays into this. Places where news coverage of crime are greater than the actual crime rate have higher levels of perceived danger than places with higher crime rates that go underreported

I'm finally getting around to reading this. I just finished the section describing how political parties have historically blocked Trump-like authoritarians from coming to power, but no longer can after the modern primary system replaced smoke filled backrooms as the means of selecting candidates
