I think a better name for "centrism of method" would be "wishy-washiness" or "spinelessness" or perhaps "I'm mostly in this elected representative thing for the steady paycheck".

the noticeable difference was that they used real political power to try to achieve that goal instead of asking nicely. The Dems that flipped have gone back to asking nicely.

I don't think caving on the shutdown is an example of "centrism" so much as it is an example of just bad politics. The asks that the Dems were making were all pretty centrist - basically, "pls give more money to insurance companies so they still take care of sick people" -
