That mockery became a political strategy. The anti-SJW backlash united a lot of otherwise-fractured right-wing spaces, and online culture wars (Gamergate, YouTube anti-feminist circles) radicalized people into the alt-right pipeline.

Back in the early 2010s, “SJW” started as a dig at certain kinds of online activism — often very punitive, purity-testing, and public-shaming heavy. Whatever the intent, it looked self-righteous and easy to mock.
