Looking down at a giant glad hanging upside down from a cliff. HONORING FLAG DAY This I believe: America can and should be the home of the brave and the land of the free. All people are created equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights. We have never actually included all people in that, though, and today our rights are under threat like never before. We live in a world of abundance, yet we are forced inside a false story of scarcity, fueled by patriarchy, predatory capitalism, and white supremacy. This lie breeds fear and anger by design, weaponized against minority and vulnerable populations in America and around the world. The Trump regime and his ruling tyrant class have made dehumanization a central tactic to make “everyone else” the enemy. It justifies hatred, scapegoating, and cruelty. We see fresh malice every day. We are the people who can change this. We can work in community to write a new story. We can imagine, and therefore create, a new world where long-espoused values can finally flourish. We can demand and become compassionate and fierce leaders. We can show up in all our embodied star-dust humanity. The commandment of Jesus, and pretty much every other faith tradition, says that we are here to love our neighbors and to take care of the people in need. That is to say, we should see every human as our neighbor—with sacredness, value, and inherent rights. We can be the neighbors we wish we had. We can start by making dinner for each other. This is the hard, unceasing work of our lifetimes. It is worth all the courage and determination we have. Dr. King’s non-violence, informed by Buddhist teaching, is the path I choose. And yes, I prefer the absurdity of hanging a giant flag upside down on a cliff to the absurdity of not hanging a giant flag upside down on a cliff. Everybody gets to tell their story.
