I once had a Belgian guy at a hostel in Brussels go "oh, Canada! How's the bilingualism going, you guys are like us right?" and we spent a subsequent half hour discussing our respective countries' linguistic and political complexities 😂

Same here! And like, I somehow had a friend or two in grade 9 when I was in grade 7 and in grade 7 when I was in grade 9, even though the same-age-mate thing was harder (I've also known preteens who blossom with babies/little kids more than peers)

Ditto. I did find that "do other activities outside school with either a mix of ages or with people who share common interests" (eg summer camp) helped me feel like at least I could get along with SOME people even if not these specific people. At least 2 years older or younger was my sweet spot

I made a chocolate mochi cake as well as butter mochi when I got into mochiko a few years ago and it was also delicious!
