Meet Larry Yetka (1924-2017), Minnesota Supreme Court Justice, son of a union organizer, Roosevelt fan, and incidentally (and likely unintentionally) one of the first judges to make it possible to criminalize abortion, predicting today's political climate in 1990:
I think there were a lot of first or second generation Americans here and to them—to that generation—I don’t think, for example, that this system would ever sustain another Great Depression. The public would not accept it. They would accept a strong man before they would ever tolerate another Depression that lasted as long as the one in the ‘30s. The reason that lasted is because many of those people had come from other countries where they’d experienced permanent recession, Depression and they looked at America as a land of opportunity. Even though we were going through great economic strife, they had confidence in the future. This generation of American’s has never really experienced privation except a growing minority in America. Now we’re getting a growing permanent underclass. That a festering sore that’s going to continue to grow unless is resolved. In the 1930s, you didn’t have that. So those people had patience and they had trust in the system that these young people don’t have. That’s the danger that I see. I think if we ever have that kind of economic stress again, the United States would move just as Germany did. They’d move to a strong man. They’d move to a Hitler or that type who could have charismatic leadership, who could move audiences, and they’d maybe be trapped just as Germany was until it was too late to do anything about it. That’s the danger I see. I don’t think the United States will turn to the left. Too many people have too much to lose. They’ll turn to the right.
