How does the pile compare with Churchill’s?

It makes me wonder whether there’s a correlation between the unexpected accession and the fame thereafter. Thatcher was unexpected post-Heath. Churchill unexpected post-Chamberlain. Henry VIII unexpected post-brother Arthur…

So, is it just gesture politics? If it doesn’t work, the government will nonetheless claim to have acted?

In any case, a Labour government should abolish first class travel and make the most of the space on the trains.

The streaming platforms do sound different. It may be partly to do with interface with my WiiM Mini. Airplay may also be a culprit. But, in brief: Presto sounds processed and has reduced ambience and a more forward slabby sound. Via Bluetooth earbuds, Presto shows distortion on some tracks.

Should have mentioned - it starts at 7.30, and in the second half (after the symphony) you can hear Elgar’s ultra luscious violin concerto featuring Charlie Lovell-Jones

Sorry to say I just couldn’t get on with Presto’s sound quality, so reluctantly moved to Qobuz. Q’s sound is on a different planet, and you get the bits of pop rock alternative which Presto doesn’t serve. P has a better interface and (they say) better artist remuneration. Q sounds better…

Picasso dog. Talking of which, I attended the Picasso Theatre ex in TatiMode this afternoon, on W&D recommendation, and was very happy with it. 🙏🏻

Gut feeling - OBR handed the project over to Santa, but the presents will be returned pretty quickly.

Very good and quite gripping. The issue about her evolving attitude to an evolving Europe - I fully appreciate what is stated here, but what about the intriguing angle floated by Clarke in Kind of Blue - that Kohl & Mitterand cold shouldered her, and her sense of exclusion hardened into hostility(?)

Following this up, I’ve now listened to the three piano concertos by Krenek, and like them very much.

… doesn’t help. Like Haitink’s early 80s digital horror. I like the slow movement, though, which adopts Boult’s faster tempo (but why the portamento?). However, the Vivaldi style of violin playing in the last movement doesn’t work, and the first two movements remind one of Dinky toys.

Having now listened to the symphony:

I don’t appreciate Hurwitz’s dissing of the players. On the contrary, they play with an unconvincingly excess of precision. I can see why Wilson tries to be as different as possible from Previn et al, but it doesn’t work IMO. And the brittle recording quality…

Out of curiosity: do you fear personal burn-out, or that you will saturate your market and grow stale?

Hurwitz says it’s a complete dud.

When I shared the driving of a friend’s Triumph 2000, on a holiday in 1980, I was pretty shocked by its handling. By comparison with my dad’s Austin Maxi 1750, which was completely sure-footed, the Triumph steered like a river barge, and I was afraid it would come off the road.
