I think this is going to be one of my favorites of 2025 from just one episode. Cast is on point with fast character development; script is insightful, hilarious, and intriguing; and the filmmaking feels top notch. What a comeback for Lee Jong suk!!

Happy birthday to one of my all-time favorite authors, @adamroberts.bsky.social

Looking forward to receiving his latest, Lake of Darkness, tomorrow (on MY birthday!!)

Went to see K-film "Hi.5" tonight with my wife and our K-drama buddies!! It was a blast and we had so much fun pointing out actors from various shows (3 of whom are currently in "Our Unwritten Seoul" even though this was filmed 4 years ago!!). Also kind of sad to see our fallen star Yoo In-ah...

Two actresses that I always feel like I'm rooting for but seem perpetually stuck in supporting roles are Shin Do-hyun (who was so great in Doom at Your Service) and Jang Hee-ryung (who was recently in The Witch but sticks in my mind the most from Sh**ting Stars).

This post got me thinking about my favorite K-drama writers...

I'm visiting one of my oldest/dearest childhood friends in Austin & he's prepared a double-feature film fest for my visit consisting of movies our parents wouldn't let us watch when we were kids!!

We're starting out w Conan/Highlander (I never did see Conan but did watch Highlander many times!)

Trying to take my mind off other stuff, I put together a list of my top 3 Kdramas for 2014-24, kind of a golden era in my opinion (things seem to be slipping a bit into repetition and cliche nowadays). Apologies if I missed anyone's favorites, but these shows are pretty unmissable to me!

Loved going to see this in the theater with my wife tonight, 20 years after we first saw it together - this time taking our sweet youngest daughter w us too! Such an incredible (condensed) version of the story!! Cast was amazing, score was so beautiful, cinematography was lovely!!

Seo Hyun-jin is my favorite kdrama actress--she emits such a combination of beauty, charm, tenderness, comedic timing, pathos, and strength often in the same character. I saw a clip from You Are My Spring (which I initially loved, but later fell flat) and it just reminded me of how great she is

Day 14: "A Therapy Drama" which I take to mean a kind of "Healing Drama" where watching it is good for your soul. My top rec would be Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha w/ Shin Min-ah & Kim Seon-ho and a stellar variety of colorful locals in a beachside town. Set the bar high for self-discovery storytelling

A 2024 Kdrama that totally flew under my radar but is amazing = Family Matters (now on Viki). It is violent/gory as all get out, yet at heart is a tender love story of a found family in an evil world (hated that the villains are all fake Christians but there are phonies seeking power thru religion)

Day 9 - (Found family): Family By Choice

So many great examples of this genre, but this recent show proved to be my favorite among them all. So beautifully written, superbly performed, and thoroughly moving from beginning to end! Finally a breakout lead role for Jung Chae-yeon!!

Day 9 (Twisty revenge): A Love to Kill

Honestly the first one that came to mind is the OLDEST Kdrama I've watched (from 2005) with excellent performances from Rain, Shin Min-ah, and my favorite underused actress, Kim Sarang, with terrible, twisty/ed, & tragic consequences to the revenge plot

Day 8 (Slice of life:) My Liberation Notes

I can't think of another kdrama quite as "slice of life" as this. I know some found the pace to be a bit glacial, but to me, writer Park Hae-young (the best of the best) made me care about every moment that crept by, from the long commutes to lonely meals

Day 7 (Ensemble cast): Reply 1988
It's obviously one of the best kdramas ever made, but honestly, the performances from both young and older actors is its greatest strength. The ahjummas especially--but their husbands too--so brilliantly cast and performed. Down to the smallest role!

Day 6 (Office romance): She Would Never Know

This is a genre that I really enjoy so there were many options (and I think I love the office dynamics in Familiar Wife best, but that's another category rec), but this one just felt like the best representation of what I like about this genre!

I wrote this poem for a little zine my church put out amidst the political and social tensions of 2020--we called the publication: "Lament Nation." I thought I'd share it this weekend as it seems so similar now. For those who may find it a bit impenetrable I'll include an explanation below...
