I hopped a train to León, Spain, and wrote an essay on America's Constitution. Beneath its inspiring universalist language and heavy mythology, our founding legal framework is--like all constitutions--a political document born of bargains and compromises. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Jimmy Carter feared Americans had chosen the wrong path. "Down that road,” he warned, “lies a mistaken idea of freedom, the right to grasp for ourselves some advantage over others. That path would be one of constant conflict between narrow interests ending in chaos and immobility." We ignored him.
