don’t know how this will be received but if that is your criteria, chris martin is your guy. ‘the scientist’ started as a riff on ‘isn’t it a pity’ and close friend noel gallagher features on ‘up and up’.

it’s not binary. combine metrics with ‘traditional numbers’ to draw your own conclusions. like AI, the data should augment decision making not dictate it. data can contradict— wright has more CS but got on base more. so who is better? stats only take you so far. it’s subjective from there.

agree. i like what the metrics can tell us and how they spark these types of debates. but they can only take us so far— when we have to dig so deep to tell us that the actual numbers aren’t what we think they are, i’m out. my view, informed by data and feel: utley wasn’t as good as wright.

appreciate your taking the time to explain your view, further agree that voters don’t always get it right (as evidenced by eno’s et al inclusion of utley). disagree with your conclusion. plaques in the hall list awards and tangible numbers, not BsR values.

may be true using advanced metrics but wright leads 2 GG to 0 for utley and 40+ more SB. understood it’s more nuanced but i reckon you have to apply the nebulous metrics to something tangible.

i don’t think the answer to leaving some of the greats out (bonds, arod) is to allow guys like utley in.
December 27, 2024 at 12:21 PM
that’s fair. i like that the baseball hall is the most difficult one to get into. you don’t have these debates about the nba and nfl hof.
December 26, 2024 at 10:58 PM
using what metrics? philly fan bias? wright’s career avg, obp, slg, ops, ops+, were all higher. more SBs too. utley is superior h2h in HR, RBI, H, and WAR, but played 350 more games and 1000 more PA. wright overtakes him in all categories except perhaps WAR if they play similar amount of games.
December 26, 2024 at 10:56 PM
i’d argue less that wright should get a vote and more that utley shouldn’t. tougher market comment was a jab at the subjectivity of an utley vote because the hall is too small. utley wasn’t a better player, just a healthier one. he doled out career ending injuries instead of receiving them.
December 26, 2024 at 9:22 PM
so you’re including him because the hof is too small? if we’re going with subjective reasoning, wright played a more difficult position in a tougher market. objectively his numbers are better and those that aren’t would have been if not for the injury. also he didn’t break an opponent’s leg.

chase utley’s seemingly inevitable inclusion into the hall of fame is the kind of thing that devalues the hall of fame.
