Retired physics teacher and education support officer. Some writing in Scots and English (Mrs Nae Offence is one of mine). Can be found cycling slowly around Lanarkshire and beyond when not doing family stuff. https://walkridecarluke.wordpress.com/
Lovely, bright, frosty day. I went to Trackside Cycles in Shotts for a couple of inner tubes and had a good blether with the guy there. Unfortunately, the back road from Allanton wasn't gritted. I dropped my guard at one point and ended up on the deck.
(It was actually quite funny)

Not very warm, a little breezy but dry and sunny. A loop around Forth, Climpy and back through the wind farm, with a detour to Winnyknowe Woods and Aitken's Pond. The woods always look lovely at this time of year.

They used to hook up extra horses to haul carriages and wagons up the hill. I wonder if the same happened here? It's certainly at the top of a hill, and the Forrest map shows some sort of road or track nearby. 2/2

Unambiguously autumnal at the pond near Craigenhill, Kilncadzow. Old maps show a building called Cleekimin near the pond. There's a similarly-named place in the Motherwell area. It's at the top of a steep hill. A 'cleek', in Scots, is a hook. 1/2

The bad news- Loanhead Farm Tearoom is closing, though it's hopefully a temporary shutdown.
The good news- there's a community cafe in Coalburn. I tried it today and it's great. Ideal if you're trying out the new paths.

"Weel Ah mind the day oor Gregor wis capped. Jist as the man pit the thing on his heid, a shaft o light lit him up." So my granny used to say, and it was an entirely accurate description, but for one detail. She wasn't there and had constructed the memory from my mum's account, and from this photo.

Eejit Street 4 - the latest edition of the Scots language comic for bairns - is out now. I've scripted some stories for it, along with Thomas and Sara Clark and Matthew Fitt. You can download it here: www.scotshooseyaldi.com/.../Eejit-St... and schools will be able to order free hard copies.

Revisiting the Coalburn paths. Not surprisingly, they're even better when it's not chucking it down as it was here: walkridecarluke.wordpress.com/2025/08/30/c... And look! A picnic bench where you can sit and talk about the interesting geology you see about you.

The Tinto Hill Tea Room has been around for as long as I can remember, but in the last few years has had quite restricted opening hours. It's now under new management and is open every day except Wednesday. The menu looked quite imaginative, but I only stopped for coffee and a scone.

Beautiful morning. It was frosty when I woke up but by the time I was out riding there were only a few patches in the shade. Cold enough, though, to merit long cycling tights for the first time in a few months.
