Did you manage to turn off the update checks? I tried this approach on MacOS and it failed to strip DRM as well. Had to download from the web.

There’s Kindle for Windows that will let you download the books just like you’d do on a physical kindle. That method didn’t work for me, but maybe you want to give it a try. Note that the article recommends an older version of Kindle for Windows.
