Had a fascinating conversation about Sino-American political relations with a confidential expert recently. He said Americans need to understand two Confucian teachings in particular:

1. “Be diligent in action and cautious in speech.”

2. “Hide one’s light and bide one’s time.”

Twenty years ago I took a train from the far south of China (Hong Kong) to the North (Beijing); it was a sleeper train that took about 48-50 hours total.

This week I took one roughly the same distance and it took 12 1/2 hours.
