White was both president and salutatorian of his senior class and then attended Hiram College, where he lettered in football, basketball & baseball.

Today's Black American you may not know is 19th Century poet and author, Paul Laurence Dunbar, born June 27, 1872 in Dayton, OH. His mother, former slave Matilda Dunbar, learned to read just so she could teach Paul. He wrote his first poem at age 6 and gave his first recital at 9.

Today's Black American you may never have heard of is Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher, born February 8, 1924 in Chickasha, OK. Her parents were survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, moving to Chickasha after their home was burned down in the violence.

Today's notable Black American you may not have heard of is blues guitarist Joe Beard, born February 4, 1938 in Ashland, MS. He grew up in Ashland, but moved to Rochester, NY in the 50's, where he worked a day job as an electrician and played in blues bands at night and on weekends.

Today, he is better known as the father of his far more famous son, James Earl Jones. Robert Earl had married James Earl's mother Ruth Connolly in 1929 and James Earl was born in 1931, but they split up in 1933 and Robert Earl didn't have a relationship with James Earl until his son was in his 20's.

Today's notable Black American is Charles Lenox Redmond, an early abolitionist born February 1, 1810 in Salem, MA. He spoke out against slavery throughout the Northeastern US and in Great Britain and helped organize and recruit men for the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, portrayed in the movie "Glory."
