Sure. And I’m not knocking the avatars. I’ve seen the first two and had wonderful times. But just in casual conversation with industry and non-industry people alike, these movies never get mentioned— no one quotes them. Which is weird!

I get annoyed by the constant ragging, but there is definitely something odd about a movie lots of people see and like, but doesn’t leave a big cultural footprint. A movie like 500 Days of Summer, which grossed 1/45th of Avatar, I would argue has a much more lasting cultural impact. But I dunno why.

Did your showing have a distinct, uh, odor? I came back from a bathroom break and it was like a slap in the face

You will. It’s so trashy and silly.

Nah, you’re definitely right about this stuff, and the nurturing is definitely gone at all levels (they don’t know how to even make stars anymore), but I just have a problem with this specific dude complaining/lying about it. It’s hard out here enough that we don’t need people misrepresenting it!

I want artists to get paid more and have more freedom, but most things this guy says are false and hollow (just like his movie!)

On an 11M budget in 2018, his floor salary was around 300-350k. But the standard W/D rate is 8-10% so he could have made up to 1M. I get that the press tour is long and unpaid, but everyone else understands that this time is really auditioning for your next job and developing your next project.

But this is also, objectively, a lie? He’s claiming to have made zero dollars on an $11M dollar movie? When he’s DGA and WGA? Maybe he made zero dollars on the back end, because those movies lost so much money, but he definitely got paid well.
