Excerpt from Nwevanu’s The Right of the People, page 184: Compared with most of our peers, the presidency and the design of our legislature make it exceptionally hard for us to pass legislation. When the role and design of our courts and the power of the states are taken into account, there simply aren't very many other nations like ours at all. That's a curious thing, given that we've had a hand in designing political institutions in so many other countries. Japan and the European nations ravaged by World War II, for instance, didn't really take after us at all, even though we helped craft their new constitutions. "It's striking that even though the U.S. Constitution is treated as a sacred text in America's political culture," the writer Matt Yglesias has noted, "we did not push any of these countries to adopt our basic framework of government." More than two years on, New York Times is still running a boilerplate casualty count that does not distinguish between Israeli military and civilian casualties—then complains the official Palestinian count doesn’t make a distinction!
Excerpt from NY Times piece about Israeli travelers getting harassed abroad: Sympathy for Israel ran high in the initial aftermath of the Hamas-led attack of Oct. 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and another 250 were taken hostage, according to the Israeli authorities, making it the deadliest single day for Jews since the Holocaust. But the good will soon dissipated as Israel prosecuted its fierce counteroffensive in Gaza, now approaching the two-year mark and with more than 60,000 Palestinians killed, according to Gaza health officials, whose tally does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.

This post is about the UK response to Farange (thus 2029) but it’s emblematic of the liberal response to GOP fearmongering too. And it will fail for the same reason: real solutions can’t fix artificial crises.
Bluesky post: Not a popular view, but I think this is the right approach. You can't win a public debate while feelings are running so high and your opponent is willing to say anything to make things even more febrile. The best thing is to solve the problem, bearing in mind the next election isn't until 2029.
