It meshes with the later movies too. In the first, Vader is fairly independent but subordinate to the military command. That command gets wiped out in the later movies, so he ends up filling more of it: by the second he's executing officers freely and commanding the fleets

It was an utterly bizzare attitude to take against a man that made reparations a national conversation. Ultimately, it showed how some leftists are unwilling to see reparations as part of a leftist political project on par with medicare for all.
