Every 10-20 years, a breakthrough technology promises non-developers to finally create software without needing to hire programmers.

So far, every such technology resulted in the need for more devs… expert in this NEW technology (or knowing how to fix it up).

Every. Time.

Doing some #FileMaker ESS performance troubleshooting today. A few findings so far: 45ms of latency between FMS and SQL Server. >100K SQL queries per day. None of the FK fields are indexed. 😱 Lots of opportunities for improvement!

Working with some prehistoric data today. This FileMaker Pro 2.1 recovery progress dialog brings back memories circa 1994.

I like the way the ecobee thermostat reports weather impact. Yesterday’s low of 1°F with a daily average around 12°F pushed our heat pump pretty hard. Also good to see the impact of using our fireplace on the weekend…run time on the 18th and 19th was much less than on similarly cold days this month.

Dug deep into the bag of tricks and boxes of CD archives to set up an environment for converting a client’s FileMaker Pro 2 files to a current version. The HD on my iMac G5 has apparently failed, but emulation to the rescue…Mac OS 9.2.2 works surprisingly well on a modern MacBook Pro using UTM!

Fascinated by my how my yard cameras in IR mode see fog. For some reason, Apple Home often detects patterns like this as a person.

The reports feature in the latest ecobee thermostat app is well done. Much more intuitive than the clunky web app.

Out today in @bittersouth.bsky.social, my dispatch from the Buffalo River, where the Waltons' ambitions to remake the Ozarks is running up against a culture that's long prized independence.

The Wonderful River of Oz — THE BITTER SOUTHERNER
America’s wealthiest family has long been refurbishing its hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas. But when the Waltons cast their eyes east, toward one of the most beloved rivers in the Ozarks, they found...

This red-bellied woodpecker is being a bully at the feeder this morning. Smaller birds are perched all around waiting for a turn.

Realized I don't like the iOS 18 "Summarize Previews" feature for Apple Home. When a camera detects motion in the driveway, I kind of want to know about it now, not in a half hour.

The pac man progress bars in WinDirStat always make me smile. There’s not enough whimsy in these kinds of utilities.

Learned a lesson about using non-LTS versions of Ubuntu on poorly-maintained servers. I set up Pi-hole for local DNS at home with a Proxmox VM using Ubuntu 23.04 and kind of forgot about it because it worked so well. Upgrading to a current release 15 months later was painful and not well documented.

Ugh. Apple Intelligence prioritizes phishing messages. (I've never had a Spotify account and this message was from another domain.)

News of the recent passing of Thomas Kurtz reminded me of the significance of BASIC in my journey as a software developer. I was a teen during the home computer heyday when magazines would curate and share code for various flavors of BASIC. I earned $50 for this one-liner.

A blind PSoS call in an OnFirstWindowOpen script with "Wait for completion: On" on FileMaker Server 21.1 will trigger 20 concurrent FMSE connections each time a server-side script runs.
