Update- per many members of the Hmong community - this man is a US citizen who was driven around and questioned and fingerprinted before being returned home. Thankfully he is safe, but this NEVER should have happened and the trauma inflicted upon this family is irreparable. 1 and I witnessed this today. A elderly man taken from his home in his underwear, leaving behind a woman and toddler with a pacifier watching from the window who only spoke Hmong. This is not humanity. This is NOT who we are. By the way, it is 10 degrees outside. TEN. Edited to add: Kristi took the video because my phone died. She stayed quiet and just recorded. I was near where they were putting him in the car, and as much as I planned on just observing and blowing my whistle, I got a little mouthy at the way they were treating him as they shoved him into the car as he was slipping in the real ice IN HIS CROCS.

NEW — DHS just posted this as an apparent explanation for why they arrested an elderly US citizen with no criminal record (it's a quote post of a post about ChongLy Thao's arrest.) The implication seems to be that all Asian men look the same, and it's not their fault they mistook one for another.

January 19, 2026 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Family Statement Correcting DHS Claims – ChongLy Scott Thao The family of ChongLy Scott Thao categorically disputes the Department of Homeland Security’s public statement regarding the ICE operation conducted on January 18, 2026, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Mr. Thao is a United States citizen with no criminal record. He does not live with, nor has he ever lived with, the individuals DHS claims were targets of this operation. The only people residing at the home are Mr. Thao, his son, his daughter-in-law, and his young grandson. They do not know the individuals DHS references. ICE agents did not present a warrant, did not ask for identification, and nevertheless forcibly entered the home with weapons drawn. Mr. Thao went willingly with ICE, despite knowing he had done nothing wrong. During the operation, Mr. Thao was removed from his home wearing only underwear in approximately 12-degree weather, in full view of his family and neighbors. He suffers from severe psoriasis, a serious medical condition that is exacerbated by extreme cold and stress. This treatment was unnecessary, degrading, and deeply traumatizing. The family strongly objects to DHS’s attempt to publicly justify this conduct with false and misleading claims. These statements have caused additional harm to a family already struggling to recover from a terrifying and unjustified encounter. The family is actively pursuing legal representation and has filed complaints with the ACLU of Minnesota and the Office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Due to the ongoing legal process, no further comment will be made at this time.
