It's views like this that stand as a powerful reminder of why we work so hard to restore peatlands and protect our natural heritage. As we look ahead to 2026, we’re excited to build on this work and continue restoring these places for future generations.

Sundown over Gortavally Bog.

Peatlands are incredible places for wildlife, carbon stores, water filters and stores as well as valuable sites for fresh air of quiet reflection.

Cowberry or lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), seen here fruiting at one of the project’s Paludiculture farms, is a small creeping plant of the heath family (Ericaceae), related to the blueberry and cranberry, is a promising Paludiculture crop.

Peat soils are mostly carbon—and when drained, they erode invisibly, releasing CO₂ + dissolved carbon. In west Mayo, we surveyed blanket bog where water cuts deep gullies + hags into the land. Restoring peatlands = better grazing, less erosion, more nature.

Soils hold a hidden seed bank that helps ecosystems bounce back from stress. When drained peatlands are rewetted + restored through paludiculture, dormant wetland plants can return. On our project sites, Marsh Pennywort + Ragged Robin are reappearing! #seedbanks #environment #paludiculture

Bog wood—oak, pine, or yew—formed 4,000–8,000 years ago in early bogs! The same oxygen-free conditions that lock in carbon also preserve the wood, turning it jet black, red, or brown over time. EUinmyregion #PeatlandsForProsperity #BogOak #Ireland
