Belfast city centre isn’t broken - it’s being kept that way. While empty luxury flats and derelict sites dominate, real people are shut out and green space is just a buzzword. Cllr Brian Smyth calls out the hollow “regeneration” narrative and blighting Belfast’s future.

Catherine Connolly steps into the moment with the clarity Ireland needs. Her voice for equality, dignity and straight-talk accountability matters now more than ever. It’s not just a handover, it’s a chance to push the country bolder, fairer and braver.

Michael D Higgins leaves behind a presidency grounded in conscience, culture and courage. He proved public office can be moral, poetic and unapologetically on the side of people over power. That’s a legacy worth protecting.

COP30 isn’t another climate summit - it’s a fight for survival and democracy. Empty words can’t stop a burning planet.

The 1.5°C target is slipping away as rich countries stall real action and finance. Climate colonialism lives on.

The Assembly voted no confidence in Education Minister Paul Givan, yet he stays in post. Why? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mal O’Hara : “Stormont has limited mechanisms for ministerial accountability. A majority of MLAs backed the motion, but it failed because it didn’t meet the cross-community threshold.

Cllr Brian Smyth didn’t mince words in City Hall. Belfast needs an overdose prevention facility. Not debate. Not delay. It’s about saving lives, treating people with dignity, and getting real about harm reduction.

It’s time for Belfast to choose compassion over judgement.

Remembrance Day is about honouring all who suffered the cost of war, military and civilian alike. We remember with respect and without division. The best tribute we can pay is working for peace, justice and a future where conflict isn’t the legacy we hand to the next generation.

Ards & North Down Council, pushed by the Department for Infrastructure, wants to charge residents fees just to speak out - while developers and vandals go free.

This stifles democracy and punishes communities fighting to protect their homes.

Zohran Mamdani just proved that bold, people-powered politics can win, even in the face of money and power. This isn’t just a victory for one candidate. It’s a message of hope: when we organise, when we stand together, we can make change happen. #ZohranMamdani

Cllr Anthony Flynn called for a full ban on greyhound racing at Belfast City Council. But Alliance watered it down - replacing a ban with “regulation” of an unregulated, cruel industry. The Greens stand for animal welfare, not compromise. #BanGreyhoundRacing

UPDATE: Belfast City Council has resumed normal business after councillors, led by Sinn Féin and joined by the Greens, walked out in protest at the Lord Mayor blocking debate on Gaza. Greens say the Mayor overstepped by refusing a recess. We’ll update if the issue returns.

1/ Paul Givan is DUP privilege in action. Never held a real job outside politics. Over a decade, he’s used power to provoke, insult, and attack minorities.

A dog died from a panic-induced stroke after fireworks went off near its home.

Cllr Anthony Flynn says what every decent person knows - our fireworks laws are broken. Twenty-year-old rules aren’t protecting pets, wildlife or people.

Fireworks might be fun for us, but they’re terrifying for many pets. The noise, flashes and smell can cause panic, injury and long-term anxiety.

If you’re celebrating tonight, think of the animals.

North Down’s unionist-backed council motion demands endless reviews and questions climate targets they once supported. Yet the climate emergency isn’t on pause - it’s getting worse, and families are paying the price.

Hope isn’t soft. It’s dangerous to the powerful.

It’s what drives people to act even when the world feels fixed against them. We don’t choose the times we live in - but we can choose what we do with them.

Northern Ireland’s social housing crisis isn’t an accident - it’s decades of neglect & austerity. The Executive parties promised 40k social homes but only built 18k over the last 20 years. Nearly 50,000 households wait for homes while funding cuts sabotage new builds.

Sorry doesn’t stop the slurry or save Lough Neagh. After decades of failure, words mean nothing without real action.

It’s time for a moratorium on slurry spreading around the Lough, to rescind the disastrous Going for Growth strategy, and set up an independent Environmental Protection Agency.
